Different Types of Trailer Hitches

At first glance, figuring out what trailer hitch to buy for your vehicle may be an overwhelming process if you don't know where to start. Luckily, choosing the best trailer hitch is a lot easier than you think. This is because most hitches are made vehicle specific, allowing you to use the year, make, model and style to find what you're looking for. After that, it depends on the towing capacity and what you will be hauling to find the perfect trailer fit.

Having the correct trailer hitch is very important. There are six main types that you will want to consider.

Trailer Hitch Types

Class 2 - Used for cars, crossovers and minivans / Used for lightweight towing up to 2,000 lbs.
Class 3 - Trucks, SUVs & cars / Common hitches for towing up to 8,000 lbs.
Class 4 - For trucks and SUVs / Heavy duty purpose towing up to 12,000 lbs.
Class 5 - Trucks and SUVs / Extremely heavy duty towing up to 20,000 lbs.

Gooseneck hitch - Mounts in the truck bed to provide a ball for a gooseneck trailer

As we listed above, hitches come in five different class types depending on the weight of the vehicle and it's towing capacity. The lower the class number, the less a vehicle weights and limits how much it can tow.
